Belgium Held First Chinese Education Fair & China-Belgium Engineering Education Forum——40th Anniversary of China-Belgium Diplomatic Relationship Series

On Sept 21, 2011, the first Chinese Higher Education Fair and China-Belgium Engineering Education Forum were opened at Group T, International University College Leuven. Sixty-seven representatives from thirty Chinese universities participated in the event, including Tsinghua University and Tianjin University. Together with their Belgian counterparts, they exchange ideas about how to anticipate and cope with the new challenges that lie ahead for higher education, resulting from China’s rapid development economically, financially, politically and technologically, as well as the collaborations of cross-borders and cross-professions.

H.E. LIAO Liqiang, Ambassador of PR China delivered congratulatory speech. More than 200 guests attended the opening ceremony, including Mr. Danny Pieters, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Belgium, Mr. Lodewijk De Witte, Governor of the Province of Flemish Brabant, Mr. Louis Tobback, Mayor of the City of Leuven, Prof. Johan De Graeve, President and Chief Executive of Group T, Prof. Dr. André Oosterlinck, President of K.U.Leuven Association, Prof. ZHAO Xianli, Head of the Delegation of the Chinese Higher Education, and Mr WANG Luxin, Counsellor for Education of Chinese Embassy.

Ambassador LIAO said in his speech, the education exhibition and forum made an important platform for bilateral cultural exchange, coincided with the fortieth anniversary of diplomatic relations. Mr Peters, reviewed the history of China-Belgium intellectual exchanges. In his opinion, the educational event is an excellent opportunity to strength brainpower cooperation. It should be understood that the Chinese culture is not limited to cooking, nor is Belgian culture just chocolate and beer. He expressed the belief that a student with a rich cultural background will have advantage in his career.

After the ceremony, Mr LIAO and Mr Peters ignited the education fair and visited the stands of Chinese universities.


The Education Fair

The same afternoon, the professors from both countries gave their opinions regarding engineering education. Mr Wim Polet and Mr BAI Yanlei, directors of Confucius Institute at Group T, delivered speech titled The Confucius Institute in the Context of Engineering Education. The Alumni Association of Belgium-China was also launched to be the network of the Belgians who studied in China, as well as the Chinese who have Belgian degrees.

Leuven is a well known university city, with 600 Chinese students. The exchange program between Group T and Beijing Jiaotong university is in its tenth year, becoming a model with more than 100 graduates. This day the hall of the university was overwhelmed by Chinese elements, the tea ceremony in the bamboo pavilion against the traditional Chinese music by guzheng and pipa.

The activity was sponsored and hosted by the Education Office of Chinese embassy, Group T and its Confucius Institute, China Education Association for International Exchange, supported by Belgian Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce. The event was reported by local and Chinese media, such as Kanaal Z, VRT Nieuws, De Morgen, De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad, Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, People’s Daily, Chinese Youth Daily and CRI.
