Harvest the Joy of Hard Working --Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia Holds the Anniversary Celebration
Lusaka, August 22nd - The first anniversary for the Confucius Institute at the University of Zambia was celebrated. Over 200 people, both Zambian and Chinese, attended the event.
The attending delegation from Zambia consisted of the Permanent Secretary of the Education Department in Zambia, Mr. Phiri, officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deans from colleges in UNZA, delegates from Zambian college of Management, Goldman Insurance Limited, Zambian Travel Agency etc. The attending delegation from China consisted of the Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Mr. Zhou Yuxiao, the Economic and Commercial counselor, Mr. Wang You, the Director of Political Department, Mr. Zhao Haihan as well as a 6-member delegation from the Hebei Provincial Department of Education, that arrived on August 21st, which included the Deputy Director General of Hebei Provincial Department of Education, Mr. Zhang Yilu, Vice President of Hebei University of Economic and Business (HUEB), Mr. Chai Zhenguo, Director of International Exchange Centre at HUEB, Mr. Shang Liwei, Dean of the College of Information and Technology at HUEB, Mr. He Zhiqiang, President of Hebei Normal University of Science and Technology, Mr. Xin Yanhuai, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Department, Mr. Dongfang Yang. Representatives from Chinese-funded Institutes in Zambia and the Chinese and Zambian Directors and teachers of Confucius Institute at UNZA also attended the event.
Firstly Vice-Chancellor of UNZA, Prof. Stephen delivered a welcome speech, thanking the guests for their attendance. Chinese Ambassador Mr. Zhou Yuxiao, Mr. Phiri and Mr. Zhang Yilu respectively gave important speeches, warmly celebrating the first anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute and the achievements they have made in language teaching and cultural dissemination. Then, the leaders cut the ribbons for the newly renovated classrooms, offices and Chinese Library Corner, and visited the exhibition that displayed their teaching achievements. The Confucius Institute donated eight sets of Chinese classic books to the Zambian Ministry of Education and the University of Zambia. The students of the Confucius Institute performed Taichi and Long Fist style martial arts, recited the famous poems of Wang Wei and Meng Haoran. A student from the intermediate class named Ma Yuehan sang a self-composed song Guitar Tells My Heart in Chinese. Also, Zambian local folk groups performed traditional Zambian dances.
The Celebration activities ended with the beautiful melody of Sweet Honey.
