Chiang Rai, June 25th, 2011—Three volunteers from Confucius Institute at Mae Fah Luang University arrived at the Chinese School in Huipeng Village, Mae Fah Luang County, Chiang Rai to train the teachers in pronunciation.

This particular day was on a weekend, a day of rest; it was also a rainy day. However, the teachers of the Chinese School in Huipeng Village were enthusiastic about learning Chinese. There were more than 20 teachers present, not only Chinese teachers, but also math teachers and physics teachers etc.

The volunteer teachers taught the teachers of the Chinese School in Huipeng Village phonetically spelt Chinese words systematically at first. The teachers learnt carefully, diligently taking notes. The volunteer teachers also explained the systematic pronunciation of phonetically spelt Chinese words and the differences between each of the speech sounds in pronunciation. Teachers were encouraged to drill the words repeatedly: they were listened to and their pronunciation was corrected with care.

Volunteer teachers showed the pictures articulation diagrams for each phonetically spelt Chinese word, providing the teachers with a more intuitive way of understanding pronunciation of phonetically spelt Chinese words.

Thanks to this class, the teachers at the Chinese School in Huipeng Village had the chance of receiving training in standard Chinese pronunciation and obtained great assistance.
