Communication and Cultural Exchange Set Up a Bridge of Friendship

Summer 2010, the State Councilor of China, MS Liu Yandong and Hillary Clinton, the United States Secretary of State announced the establishment of Sino-US cultural exchanges and high-level consultation mechanism. Soon afterward, “100,000 Strong” initiative came out. The initiative was aim to develop opportunities and funding sources for a large number of American students to study in China.

In order to better support the “100,000 Strong” and let more American students to understand the Confucius Institute’s projects and the "Chinese Bridge" scholarship program, June 15, 2011, the Confucius Institute at George Mason University received commissions of United States Department of State, held the press conference at MASON HALL of George Mason University. Including Chinese Xinhua News Agency, People's Daily, CCTV, Phoenix TV, China Daily, the Korean national television KBS, Japan's Jiji Press, Agence France-Presse in France, Le Monde, more than ten international news agencies came to press conference.

Conference conducted by Dr. Joy Hughes, the Vice-President of George Mason University and the General Council of Confucius Institute at George Mason University. Dr. Hughes introduced the global education programs of George Mason University, especially educational cooperation with Chinese universities. As the nation's highest degree of globalization and diversification of the University, George Mason University made great efforts on globalization education in recent years. Confucius Institute at George Mason University was established in 2009, amounts of cultural and educational activities were held since its founding, Confucius Institute at George Mason has became the best communication platform with China in the area of Greater Washington. This May, Confucius Institute at Mason assisted the governor of Virginia, McDonald's trip to China for further communication. Ms. McGiffert, the Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific, and Director of the 100,000 Strong Initiative had been to Confucius Institute at Mason times to discuss the projects and joined the shooting of TV show on Chinese learning and career developing. Afterwards, the Educational Director Karl Zhang and Manage Director Gao Qing of Confucius Institute at Mason introduced the events and projects of Confucius Institute at Mason in 2011, especially the“100,000 Strong” related projects like “Chinese Bridge “summer camp, scholarship, and the educational leader trip 2011.
