2011 Training Program on Teaching Materials for Overseas Chinese Language Teachers

I. Training Targets:

The purpose of the training program is to improve the quality of Confucius Institutes and the Chinese language teaching overseas, to further promote the excellent Chinese language teaching materials, and to help teachers to have a better use of the Chinese language teaching materials. The training program aims to achieve the following targets:

1. Help teachers to learn about the key Chinese language teaching materials for university, secondary school and primary schools;

2. Help teachers to learn about the writing principle, structure and contents of the introduced textbooks; help teachers to grasp the Chinese language teaching skills in various aspects and design their own teaching plan and teaching materials.

3. Help teachers to make multimedia courseware for their own Chinese language class;

4. Learn about the prevailed Chinese language teaching materials in the current market, and skills on identifying and selecting of the supplementary materials;

5. Learn about the book distribution channels of the introduced teaching materials, and to promote the teaching materials in local schools.

II. Training Arrangements:

Each destination university offers 6 classes according to the following timetable:

Summer Class A1 (July 17th-23rd)

Summer Class A2 (July 24th – 30th)

Summer Class B (August 1st – 7th)

Term Time Class C (September 18th – 24th)

Term Time Class D (October 10th – 16th)

Winter Class E (December 11th – 17th)

60-90 trainees per class

If the number of trainees cannot reach the minimum requirement, the Headquarters will arrange the allocation group in each university.

Training Duration: 7 days, including

 In-class training: 4 days

 Culture experience: 1 day

 International travel: 2 days

IV. Eligibility & Application

1. Eligibility

(1) Applicants should be the local Chinese language teachers from mainstream teaching institutions, such as universities, middle schools, elementary schools, all-day schools, etc. Chinese citizens working overseas should hold the permanent residency of the country. The age of applicant cannot exceed 60. Applicants must be fluent in Mandarin Chinese and in good health.

(2) Applicants shall declare to abide by Chinese laws and not to endanger the state security of China, harm public interests or disrupt public order.

(3) Teachers who joined the 2010 Training Program on Teaching Materials for Overseas Chinese Language Teachers cannot apply for this program. Teachers who have applied and registered with the 2011 China Workshop for Foreign Chinese Language Teachers (http://english.hanban.org/node_9903.htm#no1) cannot be transferred to this program.

(4) Each applicant shall guarantee to promote 20 copies of teaching materials introduced in the program in their local schools and area. Each applicant should submit at least 2 lesson plans, class activity design, PPT or test papers relating to the introduced materials.

(5) Each applicant shall provide the contact information of 2 other local Chinese language teachers along with the application. Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters will send Newsletter on Chinese language teaching materials and provide teaching services to all recipients.

2. Application Procedure

(2) Log on to http://jcpx.chinese.cn/ to complete the application form. The application form will be firstly approved by the local recommendation organizations, and then be submitted to the Headquarters. Local recommendation organizations are Educational (Cultural) Sections of Chinese Embassy, Confucius Institutes/Classrooms, Hanban Overseas Representative Offices, and 11 destination universities which will be hosting the training programs.

(3) Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters will send confirmation letters to the recruited applicants after final approval.

(4) Invitation letters and training manuals will be sent to each recruited applicant by the destination universities.

VI. Training Courses

1. Textbook Special Course: Participants will take part into various activities such as lectures, seminars, discussions, case study and teaching practice to learn about the characteristics, using methods and supplementary resources of each set of teaching materials. Courses will introduce the writing principle, structure, and textbook using skills. Section on education technology skills will also be included in the course for helping participants to search and use various teaching resources. Courses will focus more on the demonstration lesson, lesson observation, and lesson plan writing and PPT production.

2. Interaction Section: participants will have the opportunity to discuss and create supplementary materials for the introduced textbooks, such as teaching plan, PPT and test papers. Suggestions on improving the current teaching materials will also be collected during the section, as well as the participants’ summary and feedback on the training.

VII. Training Cost

Expenses for participating the training program including tuition, food, accommodation and teaching materials are covered by Hanban / Confucius Institute Headquarters.

Participant who has financial difficulty in purchasing flight tickets may apply for travel allowance to Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters. International flight tickets (including the international flight and domestic flight in China) will be purchased through Hanban Representative Offices in North America, UK, Southeast Asia, Oceania and Thailand.

VIII. After-Training Service:

1. Each participant will have 2 sets of teaching materials free of charge upon completing the training program. Teaching materials can be selected from the appointed titles, and include all the supplementary resources including teaching plan, PPT, courseware, training video and demo lessons.

2. Each participant will receive Newsletters from the Headquarter with the updated information on teaching resources and online resources download.

3. Participants who would like to purchase textbooks will enjoy 20% discount (except for English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and Korean versions, please refer to jxzy.chinese.cn), please contact Hanban Overseas Representative Offices in North America, UK, Southeast Asia, Oceania and Thailand.

4. Participants will be recruited as the members of the international society for Chinese Language Teaching upon application.
