A seminar sponsored by the World Bank, Reflection on Higher Education in Madagascar, was convened in Antananarivo, capital of Madagascar. Malagasy manager of the Bank, secretary-general of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, and presidents of key universities in Madagascar were present in the Seminar. Dr. Wu Zhifeng from Confucius Institute at University of Antananarivo (CIUA), the only foreign language teaching institution invited to participate in the Seminar, made a keynote speech on Chinese higher education.

The Seminar aims to reflect on the status quo of Malagasy higher education and advance higher education reform in the country. The outcome of the Seminar will provide suggestions for the country to join the Bologna Process, a European reform process aimed at creating the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) based on international cooperation and academic exchange.

Chinese higher education model has attracted wide-spread attention from Malagasy colleagues. Malagasy main-stream newspaper LA VERITE published a commentary on Chinese education on April 8 this year, calling for the country to value and refer to Chinese model for its own higher education reform and development.
