As we all know, Traditional Chinese Medical Science is a very important part of Chinese culture. In order to let more Turks know about it, a Lecture on Health Care in Traditional Chinese Medical Way was held by the Confucius Institute at the Middle East Technical University on April 13.

It has been a great honor to invite Professor Wang Rui from Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine as the major speaker for this lecture, which attracted hundreds of Turkish teachers, students and other people from all circles.

Professor Wang Rui introduced the main characteristics of Traditional Chinese Medical Science, such as the concepts of wholism and dialectic diagnosis with simple language and vivid pictures. Meanwhile, he also recommended some efficient health care treatment, which is easy to apply. The acupuncture and massage health care especially aroused great interest of the audience. Under Professor Wang’s instruction, the audience selected the right acupuncture points (such as Guanyuan, Qihai, Tsusanli, Neiguan, Hoku, Sanyinchiao and so on) to experience the magic of Chinese medical health care therapy.

The lecture lasted for two hours. The audience raised many interesting questions about Chinese Medical Science as follows: Has the theory of five elements still been guiding the treatment of clinical Chinese medical science nowadays? Does the Midnight-noon and ebb-flow doctrine have influence on the acupuncture treatment? Is the “qi” substance or energy? The diet is quite different between the Turks and Chinese. The Turks take the roast meat as the main food, therefore, their blood viscosity is very high. Does the acupuncture therapy suit the Turks? When can the Chinese medicine treatment be applied to the Turks? Has there been any expert of Chinese medicine in Turkey at the present time? Is there any English specification for moxibustion with moxa stick and is it available in Turkey? …

After the lecture, Professor Wang was surrounded by the audience at once, and they were striving to be the first one to experience the effects of acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping therapy. Li Jing, the journalist from CCTV, who was eager to be the first person, had to give the precious chance to a Turkish columnist, Afife Hellena Sozmen, who felt honorable to be the first one, “To Turks, this is a special opportunity. It is better to let us experience it first.”

“The Chinese medicine is magical, and I like the Chinese culture very much. Thus, I have brought more than ten friends of mine here today, hoping to share this with them.” Ms.Ozland said excitedly in fluent Chinese, who had worked at Turkish Embassy in China. And she also expressed, “I expect Confucius Institute to hold more lectures like this in future.”

Professor Wang hoped that more and more Turks get to know the Chinese medical science, and learn Chinese culture through this lecture. “The traditional Chinese medical science is a concentration from the traditional Chinese culture and ancient philosophical ideology, thus this lecture demonstrates, from the beginning to the end, the Confucius ideology of ‘Harmony matters’ and Taoistic idea of “The Tao (way) follows nature.”

From April 14th to 19th, Professor Wang Rui also delivered lectures separately in Ankara University, the Foundation of Sino-Turkish Friendship, the Confucius Institute at Bogazici University in Istanbul as well as Sino-Turkish Cultural and Educational Center.
