On Apr.11st afternoon, the Chinese director of UCC Confucius Institute (UCC CI) Dr. Zhu Yanwei and Chinese volunteer teacher Ye Xiaomin were invited to attend the 200th anniversary of the founding of the North Monastery Primary School and were received by the president of Ireland Mary McAleese.

Dr. Zhu, representing UCC CI, extended the congratulations to the Principal Con Higgins for the 200 anniversary. 50 Chinese books and a horizontal scroll of calligraphy with Chinese character Yu Ying (Human Capacity Building) were given to the principal as gifts. Dr. Zhu also introduced the Chinese language teaching to the President. The president Mary McAleese watched the facial makeup painted by students with interest and said thanks for the hard working to the Chinese teacher.

North Monastery Primary School was established in 1811. It is a renowned primary school in Cork. From September, 2009, UCC CI started to give Chinese classes to this school. The classes are designed with full consideration of students’ curiosity and the strong desire of seeking knowledge in Chinese language and culture. Chinese paper-cutting, Chinese martial arts, Chinese calligraphy and other Chinese culture experience activities are carried out and are welcomed by students. Both the current Principal Con Higgins and the vice Principal Seán Aodán visited China before. North Monastery Primary School has established a sister school relation with Shanghai Hengfeng Middle School and it is applying to establish Confucius Classroom at the moment.
