On 5th February 2011, under the invitation of Wigan Council Museum-the Museum of Wigan Life, the Confucius Classroom of Wigan-Leigh College held a big Chinese New Year Celebration. More than 230 people from all walks of life participated. Among them, are the President of Xi’an Bo-AI International School and his wife.

The celebration was to be held in the City Square. However, it was moved to the museum because of a heavy rain. It presented the local people a splendid culture feast. The activities included Lion Dance, learning to write Chinese calligraphy, making Chinese paper dragons, sending off red pocket etc.

The local people showed great passion for the celebration despite of the heavy rain. They came an hour earlier than scheduled. In the museum, everywhere was decorated with red lanterns, Chinese knots, and Chinese couplets. And Chinese folk music such as Xiyangyang, Bubugao floated in the air, which helps to create a merry atmosphere.

At 12 o clock, with the happy beat of Chinese drums, the Lion Dance began. It was performed by British young people and overseas Chinese. For the first time in their life, the local people watched such an interesting live show. And some children got so excited that they clapped their hands to their heart joy. During the break, Mr Wang Guoping, the President of Xi’an Bo-Ai International School, distributed red pocket to visitors and students, which aroused great sensation.

To learn Chinese calligraphy is another peak time of the day. Many English students were eager to have a Chinese name and have it written with brush. And they signed to study at Confucius Classroom on the spot.

The big celebration didn’t end until 4 o clock, an hour late than planned. Later, it was reported in the local newspaper with 2 papers. It is really a hit!
