Liu Yandong Visits the Confucius Institute at Catholic University, Chile

Xinhua New Agency, San Diego, Dec 23rd, by reporter Luan Xiang—during her visit to Chile, State Councilor Liu Yandong came to inspect the Confucius Institute at Catholic University; she met with teachers and students of the institute as well as those of the Confucius Institute at the University of Saint Thomas and paid a visit to San Diego Yangtze School.

Madam Liu listened to a report from President Sanchez introducing the Confucius Institute and she watched a report performance from the students. She praised the institute’s achievements in Chinese education and encouraged the students to continue to contribute to the promotion of cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries, and to mutual understanding and friendship between their peoples.

In her speech, Madam Liu stated that China and Chile are geographically very far apart, however their people enjoy a deep friendship. The further expansion of Sino-Chilean exchanges and cultural and educational cooperation are of great significance to the continuous development of relations between the countries. Language and cultural exchange are an important part of exchanges between people and exchanges of culture. As a prestigious school in Chile, the Catholic University has worked with its Chinese partner to set up a Confucius Institute, so as to offer Chilean students a new platform for learning Chinese language and understanding Chinese culture, which will surely play active role in promoting people-to-people exchanges and cultural exchanges, as well as friendly relations between the two countries.

President Sanchez explained that his school has always attached importance to exchanges and cooperation with Chinese colleges and universities. He explained that the establishment of the Confucius Institute has helped his school further ties with China; and that he wishes to use the institute as a platform for expansion of Chinese education in Chile, to promote Chile-China exchanges in culture and education and contribute to the development of the two countries’ friendship.

When visiting San Diego Yangtze School, Which is named after the Yangtze, Madam Liu pointed out that the school had taken the lead in offering Chinese courses at primary schools; it has carried out various cultural activities in cooperation with its Chinese partner and made active contributions to building friendship between the two peoples - especially those of their youths- and the development of Sino-Chilean friendship. She encouraged the teachers and students to work harder to learn more about Chinese culture and push Sino-Chilean friendship onwards.

On the same day, Madam Liu also met with staff from the Chinese Embassy in Chile as well as representatives of Chinese-funded enterprises and overseas Chinese people.
