Li Changchun Attends the Opening Ceremony for the 5th Confucius Institute Conference and Gives the Performance Warm Appraisal

Beijing, Dec.10th (reported by Liu Fei)—the 5th Confucius Institute Conference was held in China’s National Convention Center. Li Changchun, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, attended the meeting. He gave out awards for Confucius Institutes of the Year, Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence and Chinese teaching materials and watched performances given by Confucius Institute students. He expressed his congratulations to the prize winners and encouraged them to exchange stories of their successful experiences and learn from each other, as well as encouraging them to continue to contribute to Sino-Foreign cultural and educational exchanges and cooperation, enhance the friendships between Chinese people and people from other countries and promote the establishment of a harmonious world.

After the opening ceremony, the institute’s performance kicked off with the joyful song and dance ‘Full of Spring Beauty’. Student representatives from 33 Confucius Institutes of 28 countries participated in the performance, among which students from Britain, Germany and Zimbabwe performed a Chinese chorus, students from Australia, Russia and America performed a comic show ‘I learn Chinese in Confucius Institute’, students from Hungary, Chile and Norway performed excellent Chinese martial arts, students from France, Italy, Egypt, Brazil and Latvia sang classical love songs in Chinese and performed the traditional Chinese love story ‘Butterfly lovers’. Foreign envoys in China who are in the training program of Chinese courses also staged programs for the audience, such as the popular song ‘One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six and Seven’. The performance proceeded in a joyful and humorous atmosphere, demonstrating the students’ interest and enthusiasm for learning the Chinese language and Chinese culture. These performances also clearly demonstrated the Institutes’ achievements in Chinese teaching and showcased the integration of Chinese and foreign cultures, winning warm applause from the audience. With the singing of ‘Youngsters Meet Together’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne’, the performance came to an end. Finally, Mr. Li Changchun came to the stage and highly praised the wonderful performance of the students. He shook hands with them and took a group photo with them.

Liu Yandong, a member of Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, State Councilors and Chair of the Council of Confucius Institute Headquarters attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

Madam Liu pointed out that Confucius Institute have developed to extraordinary levels for the past 5 years, as well as making remarkable achievements in regards to spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture. She said that the exchanges and communication between a variety of cultures, the ideals of harmony and co-existence, as well as the trend towards international educational cooperation, opening up to foreign cultures, reform and expansion had all greatly contributed to the development of the Institutes. The number of new opportunities for cooperation is ever increasing, and as such, new tasks and directions for the Institutes are also increasing. In regards to the future development of the Institutes’, she promised to increase support, and cooperation in order to promote sustainable development. . In addition, she stated that they would continue to innovate systems, integrate with local educational systems, and satisfy the demand for Chinese learning from different peoples, enabling Confucius Institute to be an important bridge enhancing Sino-foreign exchanges and cooperation. She stressed the importance of teachers, teaching materials and teaching methods. Furthermore, she stated that it was important strengthen the knowledge of infrastructure capabilities, improve the quality of the Institutes’, continue to expand the scope of service, enrich teaching content, and give the Institute a more active role in language teaching, and humanistic exchanges in order to promote cooperation and mutual benefit.

The annual Confucius Institute conference is held with the purpose of summarizing the experience of running Confucius Institutes, increasing communications and strengthening cooperation between different institutes. Since 2006, the conference has been held five times. With the theme of the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes, the two-day meeting this year attracted 1,400 university presidents and Confucius Institute directors from 96 countries who participated in the event. During the conference, a president’s forum, a director’s forum, a Chinese teaching material exhibition and other activities were held.
