Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Visits the Confucius Institute at St. Petersburg State University

St. Petersburg, November 22nd, 2010—during her visit to Russia, State Councilor Liu Yandong paid a visit to the Confucius Institute at St. Petersburg State University and had cordial talks with the institute teachers and students. Madam Liu fully affirmed the achievements in regards to the cooperation between the Department of Oriental Studies and the Confucius Institute as well as the institute’s effort in Chinese teaching and studies. She stressed that the strategic partnership between China and Russia will not only benefit the two peoples, but is also of great importance to world peace and human progress. Cultural and language exchanges will lay a solid foundation for the strategic partnership between the two countries. She expressed her hope that St. Petersburg State University, in particular the Department of Oriental Studies will increase their cooperation with related universities in China, so as to make the Confucius Institute a success and contribute to cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

At 11 a.m., State Councilor Liu came to the Confucius Institute’s exhibition hall amidst warm applause. The institute’s Russian Director Zelenev gave a detailed introduction to the school’s characteristics and cultural activities as well as the Chinese teaching and cultural activities carried out by 15 Confucius Institutes during the “Chinese Year” in Russia. The director also presented Madam Liu a book entitled “Russian Confucius Institutes’ ‘Chinese Year’ Activities Collection” published by St. Petersburg State University and introduced the 2011 cooperation initiative between the Department of Oriental Studies and the Confucius Institute—editing and publishing a catalog of rare Chinese books collected by the department.

Afterward, students staged excellent performances todemonstrate how well they had learned Chinese at the Institute. . Irina told of her experience of learning Chinese language in fluent Chinese; Yrat, who had recently married an overseas Chinese student gave candy wedding favors to the guests, so as to share her happiness with them; Ilona from the Department of Oriental Studies sang the song of the Dream of Red Mansions, which brought down the house.

The institute students also displayed their Chinese exercise books and Madam Liu prasied their beautiful handwriting.

During the visit, State Councilor Liu also met with Speshnyov Nikolai Alekseevich, a famous sinologist and Chairman of the Russia-China Friendship Association in St. Petersburg and hailed his contributions to Chinese education and research in Russian.
