Confucius Institute at Novosibirsk State University of Technology Cerebrates its 3rd Anniversary

Novosibirsk, September 7th—on the occasion of its 3rd anniversary celebration, the Confucius Institute at Novosibirsk State University of Technology held a solemn unveiling ceremony for its Chinese Culture Corner and Chinese Book Exhibition.

Deputy director of the Bureau of Education of Novosibirsk, first vice chancellor of Novosibirsk State University of Technology and vice chancellor for foreign affairs were invited to the occasion and gave speeches. Some 100 people, including all Chinese teachers from Novosibirsk State University of Technology, Novosibirsk State University, the Institute of International Relations, the Teacher Training Institute and the Transport University, principals of the Middle School attached to Novosibirsk State University of Technology and the No. 4 Middle School, Chinese and foreign deans of the Confucius Institute, working staff and Chinese enthusiasts were present at the ceremony. Novosibirsk's РБК TV Station made special report about the ceremony.

During a passionate speech, the deputy director of the Bureau of Education pointed out that not only should people understand each other's laguange and culture; they could further strengthen cooperation in education and other fields. With the help of the Confucius Institute, young Chinese learners and sinologists in Novosibirsk have been growing and will became an important force in promoting friendly cooperative relations between the two parties. The deputy director expressed wishes for the institute to take this opportunity to continue to give full play to its strengths and help Russian people gain a deep understanding of traditional Chinese culture through the opening of the Culture Corner and the book exhibition.

The first vice chancellor and vice chancellor for foreign affairs also delivered speeches. They extended warm congratulations on the 3rd anniversary of the institute and the opening of the Culture Corner of Chinese and the Chinese book exhibition. They also affirmed the institute's efforts in Chinese teaching over the past 3 years, and wished for the institute to become a bridge for Sino-Russian cultural exchange, with great support from various fields. Finally, they expressed hopes that the Culture Corner and the exhibition could make new contributions to cultural exchange between the two countries.

Mu Xianming, Foreign Dean of the Confucius Institute first reviewed the achievements the institute has made in promoting Chinese language and culture and carrying out cooperation with other schools in the past 3 years. Then he introduced the school’s touch screen computers which were donated by Hanban. He stated that through the touch screen, visitors could learn about ancient Chinese thinkers and philosophers, Chinese cities- past and present-, ancient Chinese science and technology (including the four great inventions, traditional Chinese medicine, mathematics and astronomy), various China cuisines, Chinese landscapes, Beijing opera, the origin of Chinese script, Chinese kungfu, calligraphy and paper-cutting. He also demonstrated multimedia software developed by the Confucius Institute Headquarters, which displayed splendid Chinese culture through vivid video, audio and pictures.

Chinese Dean Yang Meihua introduced the book exhibition held at the Culture Corner. She said that with support of Hanban, more than 10,000 Chinese books and 1,000 discs were on display at the Culture Corner. The exhibits would help people learn more about Chinese culture.

Finally, Anna, Secretary of the institute expounded upon and demonstrated use of the Chinese sound wall charts, a kind of multimedia teaching material. The demonstration drew visitors present into a colorful world of Chinese language.

Since its establishment 3 years ago, the institute has received attention and support from Hanban, the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Novosibirsk State University of Technology and Dalian University of Foreign Languages and has developed rapidly. In the future the institute will continue to promote Chinese language and culture through various teaching and cultural activities, striving for the status of Chinese cultural center of Novosibirsk.
