Confucius Institute at Kigali Institute of Education Holds First Anniversary Celebration

Kigali, August 26-the Confucius Institute at the Kigali Institute of Education solemnly celebrated its first anniversary. Over 500 guests, including Prof. George K. Njoroge, President of the Kigali Institute of Education, Vice President Kamali Alphonse, a delegation from Chongqing Normal University, officials from the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda, foreign and Chinese Deans of the Confucius Institute, representatives of Chinese-funded institutions, teachers and students from the Confucius Institute and the Kigali Institute of Education, as well as representatives of local media outlets were present at the occasion.

Ms. Yanzigiye Beatrice, Dean of the Confucius Institute, started off the ceremony by giving a welcome speech. She also reviewed the achievements made by the Confucius Institute in the promotion of Chinese language and culture and cooperation with other schools since the institute's establishment one year ago. She also discussed the prospect of future development of the Institute. Afterward, Ma Wenhua, Director-General of the Office of Party and Government Affairs of Chongqing Normal University, delivered a speech on behalf of President Prof. Zhou Zeyang. He thanked Hanban, the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda and the Kigali Institute of Education for their support of the Confucius Institute and expressed the hope that the two schools would strengthen their cooperation in the areas of science and education via the Confucius Institute. Finally, President George K. Njoroge extended a warm welcome to all the guests and stated that his school would continue to support the Confucius Institute and continue to promote friendship and exchange between the two peoples.

After the celebration, a party jointly hosted by the Kigali Institute of Education, the Chongqing Normal University art troupe and the Confucius Institute started. A variety of performances were given such as a folk dance entitled "Jasmine Flower", tai chi chuan "Descendent of the Dragon" performances, a modern dance performance entitled "Liang Zhu" and a show called "Peking Opera Mask". The song "Won Victory in the First Battle" sung by students of the Confucius Institute together with the art troupe was the highlight of the party. The art troupe also presented the Kigali Institute of Education with a calligraphic work they created at the party. Local TV station, radio station and newspapers reported on the event.

Since its establishment one year ago, the Confucius Institute has carried out a variety of Chinese training and cultural activities, played an active role in promoting cultural exchange between China and Rwanda, and has helped more Rwandan people learn about Chinese culture.
