Thai Confucius Institute at the Prince of Songkla University Offers Traditional Chinese Art Courses

Suratthanee, July 3rd--At the invitation of the Prince of Songkla University, Suratthanee, Thailand, Mr. Xu Buqun the distinguished Teacher and volunteer teacher Feng Qingnan in the Phuket Confucius Institute organized a one-month traditional Chinese art courses in the Prince of Songkla University, Suratthanee. A total of more than 70 students registered with program.

Xu Buqun has extensive experience in teaching calligraphy especially for foreign students. After a brief introduction of calligraphy and exhibition of works, Mr. Xu Buqun demonstrated, starting with the hieroglyphs and using a rich body language, to the students the charm of Chinese characters and greatly enhanced their interests in Chinese calligraphy. The atmosphere was very active in the classroom. The students watched the Chinese ”Four Treasures of the Study” (brush pen, ink-stick, paper and ink-stone), observed the posture of writing, and then followed the teacher with great interests to brush-holding, ink-preparing with an ink-stick and water, and also writing. Xu also wrote in person a four-word motto for each student. After the class, the students wanted to learn more. They expressed their increased interests in calligraphy, and said they would practice more at home.

The class of Chinese knot making was also spectacular. Feng Qingnan explained the history, meaning and applications of the Chinese knot with pictures. The first lecture lasted for only 2 hours whilst the students quickly mastered several basic weaving methods of Chinese knots and also became capable of making some simple pattern combinations. The students said excitedly that they would give the Chinese knots made by themselves to their parents and bring them good luck.
