American Confucius Institute at Arizona State University hosts a Hanban Book Exhibit

Tucson, April 14th – the “Hanban Book Exhibit” sponsored by the Confucius Institute at Arizona State University (ASU) commenced in the ASU.

The Confucius Institute at ASU showed a ‘Five Thousand Years of Chinese Script’ video and displayed varied and colorful books to attract Chinese learners during the exhibition. The exhibition area was divided into three sections: a book exhibition, a section of interactive language learning and a recreational section. The book exhibition section displayed hundreds of volumes of Chinese teaching and cultural reading materials. At the interactive language learning section, teachers adopted Chinese Audio Primers to teach visitors Chinese characters by asking them to point at pictures with a sensor pen. In the recreational section, visitors tried to find books from a display board, they enjoyed the process of searching for answers very much.

In order to let Chinese beginners and lovers get to know more about the exhibits, teachers from AUS Chinese Department served as narrators introducing interesting books and Chinese learning materials to visitors and patiently answering visitors’ questions. The prize drawing was most certainly a climax of the exhibit, the ASU Confucius Institute prepared delicate paper cut works and mini Chinese dictionaries for visitors, more than 10 enthusiastic and lucky visitors won the prizes, 3 among which won special prizes, they were able to take away whichever Chinese cultural reading materials they liked best.

ASU TV station recorded the whole exhibition and interviewed some visitors. Interviewees found their favorite books, explaining why they liked them in English and expressing their confidence in learning Chinese in Chinese. The Chinese learning upsurge has spread over Arizona after ASU’s report on the book exhibit. According the ASU Confucius Institute, the library of the ASU Confucius Institute will be open to readers who are interested in Chinese language and culture.
