Performances by Huazhong University of Science and Technology Art Troupe at the US Confucius Institutes a Success

From Jan. 25th to Feb. 5th, the Huazhong University of Science and Technology Art Troupe was on tour in the US at the invitation of the Confucius Institute at Wayne State University. The art troupe has given performances at the Confucius Institute at The University of Chicago, the Confucius Institute at Western Michigan University, the Norweigan High School in Michigan, Detroit Music Hall Centre and Confucius Classroom at Rockville Middle School of Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland. Every performance resulted in a strong reaction at the Confucius Institute and in the local area. In particular, the performance at Detroit Music Hall Centre on Jan. 30th mad a great impression on local citizens.

The Art troupe carefully arranged the programs of the tour, each performance was divided in to three segments: Chutianyun (Chu Style, Chu is title of an ancient Chinese empire in the Warring States Period), Changjiangqing (the Charm of the Changjiang River) and Zhongguofeng (China Style) in order to give a full-scale elaboration on the connotations of Chinese culture. In the segment of Chu Style, the Chinese songs walk into Shennongjia Primitive Forest, I Come from the Three Gorges, the dance the Scent of Xiangxi, song and dance performance Dragon Boat Tune, Colorful Fan, Chinese koto solo On the Miluo River revived the unique charm of the Chu culture embodying its distinctive characteristics. In addition, there were interactive activities interspersed in the performance aroused audiences’ interest.

“Thank you for giving us such a wonderful performance, we liked it very much. The performance was extraordinary, the choreography was gorgeous!” an audience member named Leoni Teichman expressed her admiration of the performance after it had finished. An alumni from Huazhong University of Science and Technology could not wait to send a congratulatory letter to the organizer of the performing tour—the Chinese Dean of the Confucius Institute at Wayne State University: “Congratulations on the grand success of the performance! The performance was a wonderful posing of my old school, were proud of it!” After the performance in the state of Maryland was concluded, an old overseas Chinese was so excited that he wrote down a piece of verse to express his feeling.

The Confucius Institute at Wayne State University held a grand reception party in Detroit to celebrate the success of the tour. In excess of 70 guests, including: well known figures from political, educational, cultural and business circles, members of local Chinese community and artistic productions participated in the party. Deputy Secretary Liu Jianfan made a passionate speech extending his heartfelt appreciation to all those that contributed to the tour, Liu also explained the significance of the tour as a cultural exchange event by quoting the Confucius’ “harmonious yet different” saying
