Delegates from 87 Countries and Regions set to participate in the 4th Confucius Institute Conference

According to a report on Dec. 4th by Jing Wu, a Journalist from Xinhua News Agency, the 4th Confucius Institute Conference will be held from Dec. 11 to 13 in Beijing, 500 deans from universities home to Confucius Institutes and representatives of Confucius Institutes will participate in the conference.

The last annual Confucius Institute Conference was first held in 2006. According to Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban and General Director of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, focusing on the subject of Confucius Institute and Community Services, the 4th Confucius Institute Conference will feature an Opening Ceremony, Performance by Confucius Institutes, President’s Forum & Sub-Session Discussion, Experience Exchange and Plenary. The objective of the conference is to show teaching achievements, build up a platform for exchange as well as recognize valuable experiences.

Actors and actress featuring in the Performance by Confucius Institutes are students from Confucius Institutes from around the world; they will provide a vivid depiction of the development of Confucius Institutes as well as the spirit of foreign students. The President’s Forum will make discourses concerning practical issues of the development of Confucius Institutes. The Confucius Institute Resources and World Language Exhibition will also be held concurrently with the conference, displaying excellent Chinese teaching materials and demonstration of curriculums and the innovative concepts and actions of Confucius Institutes worldwide taken in the promotion of Chinese language and cultural dissemination.

Xu Lin pointed out that, “facing the Chinese fever around the world, we must drive forward our mission more carefully and optimize the Chinese-Foreign cooperative management mechanism of the Confucius Institute.” In order to further advance the construction of overseas Confucius Institutes, there have been some 120 Chinese universities and educational institutions involved in cooperative management. In order to guarantee teaching quality, Chinese partner schools have dispatched Chinese teachers to 110 countries around the globe.

To date, there have been 282 Confucius Institutes and 272 Confucius Classrooms (mainly established in middle schools) established within 88 countries and regions around the world, and there are about 40 million people learning Chinese in overseas countries. In addition, there are over 260 organizations based in more than 50 countries which have submitted applications for establishing Confucius Institutes. According to the Confucius Institute Headquarters’ statistics, by the end of Oct. 2009, there were over 8,000 Chinese classes launched within over 250 Confucius Institutes and there are about 100 Confucius Classrooms worldwide, with 2,300,000 students registered.
