With the support of the Confucius Institute at the University of Yaounde Ⅱ, the senior normal college of the University of Maroua opened its new Chinese curriculum. On Nov. 16th, 44 students from two different grades in the Chinese department began their Chinese classes for the 09-10 academic year. These students will graduate four years on, and will become the first group of local Cameroonian Chinese teachers. The Confucius Institute dispatched 4 Chinese teachers to the university. The President, Dean of the Senior Normal College and Director of the Foreign Language Department of the University of Maroua all expressed their appreciation to the Confucius Institute for its support and its role in the living and working arrangements of the Chinese teachers.

Maroua is located to the south of the Republic of Chad, in eastern Nigeria and on the west of Central Africa. Apparently the University of Maroua is the only university in central and western Africa that has a Chinese department. The Maroua TV Station made a live report on the launch of the Chinese class.
